After being an avid user of legal streaming services (Netflix, Spotify, Prime Video, to name but a few) I read some disconcerting news. A Kodi Box allows users to stream various media to their devices (the previously mentioned Netflix for example), nothing illegal about that. However a Kodi box can be used for nefarious deeds as they’re completely open source, with access to various plug-ins which turn a perfectly legal Kodi Box into a tool for piracy.
As of April 28th the Digital Economy Bill was passed by the government which means if you’re found guilty of Piracy (No, not the the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea. But the other type. Unauthorised use or reproduction of another’s work) you could face up to 10 years in prison.
I just want to reiterate that owning or using a Kodi Box is still legal. Don’t panic if you own one, you’re fine providing you use it as intended.
The Digital Economy Bill, warns those who choose to download or make films or events available online by using torrents are committing a criminal offence. The DEB is proposing ten-year sentences, but has been said “they will only be applied in the most serious of criminal circumstances”
